Why Kobudo?

Ancient Martial Arts: Kobudo

Our mission is the study of “kobudo” – Japan’s “old martial arts” so that we can hone our spirits, and strengthen our bodies. Fortunately, our “jissen” – “realistic combat” outlook on this training reminds us of the commonality we have with one another as people.

Martial Arts: A Key To Enoying Life

By experiencing over and over again the harsh emotional environment of combat or fighting, we are able to see the beauty of our daily existence. If you spend time on the mat, with your partners playing the roles of aggressive “attackers” who are constantly trying to push, punch, kick, cut, and throw you, it’s pretty hard to get upset about life’s daily mundane troubles.

Martial Arts: A Key To Helping Others

Conversely, when you then take your turn as the “attacker” you are offering yourself wholeheartedly to your training partner so that they will have a close-to-real experience and overcome the huge obstacles we give each other in training.

The really tough part: it’s their turn to learn how to win their safety, and we must attack ferociously, but only enough to push their limits so that they grow … so that in the end, they learn to win. This must mean that we learn to accept our role at that moment – we face the losing end of that training – for their benefit. It takes a much stronger sense of self to do that for someone else. That’s “aggressive compassion” at its finest. The good news is that by this process we are able to create an atmosphere of extreme trust, enormous personal growth, and some of the best friends you will likely ever come to know.
